There are many suppliers in the market that dilute essential oils with synthetic ingredients to cut on their cost, something that entirely degrades the purity of the oil, demeans the value of being truly organic and defeats the purpose for which it was intended.

Here are list of factors to the essential oil buying guide which you can employ to ascertain the purity of what you are buying –

  1. Look for mention of Botanical name – This one gives you idea of the plant and part of it that was used to extract the essential oil. Moreover this gives an idea that the supplier knows his thing and what he might be selling could be genuine
  2. Look for Certifications – Look if your supplier discloses any certification for the oils he’s selling. Ones you should be looking for is COA, GMP, ISO and Organic Certification like FDA etc.
  3. Freezing – This one’s a test to be done after you have received your essential oil set. Put it in a freezer and leave for about 2 hrs. If any part of the oil turns into ice, we can conclude it has been diluted.
  4. Perform Paper Bloat Test – Technically this should be done with Cotton track paper. But if you don’t have one you may do it with plain white A4 size sheet. Apply a drop of essential oil on the paper. Leave it aside for 1-2 hour. If its pure essential oil it should evaporate completely leaving no trace of the liquid. (This test however may not be accurate for citrus oils like orange, lemon or jojoba which have colour pigment in them)

Cautions to Follow during Use of Essential Oils

Since essential oils are potent concentrated liquids that are extracted from plants, there are some precautions you need to follow when using it. These mostly apply to application on body.

  1. When applying on skin or any part of body always dilute the essential oil with natural carrier oils. Massage blends should not exceed 1% concentration of essential oil, i.e. for 1 drop of essential oil 1 teaspoon of natural carrier oil should be used.
  2. Citrus Oils like Orange and Lemon/Lemongrass are photo-sensitive, therefore avoid application on skin while out in the sun.
  3. Discontinue Use in case of any irritation
  4. Keep away from Children.
